VILLA MADIBA

VILLA MADIBA

Baltissimmo constructed Villa Madiba, a 24-unit residential care facility for the non-profit organisation VZW Ubuntu Achtkanter, in which people with disabilities can live throughout their lives with maximum independence. Extra emphasis is placed on communal functions and support services in the building.

Homeliness was one of the main pillars of the design. Architecturally, this was achieved by dividing the building into six linked single-floor houses with a pitched roof. Three of these face onto the street and thus refer to a recognisable typology on the street. The other three houses are located to the rear, forming a U-shape with an enclosed courtyard. Each residential unit has its own front garden and entrance door. A footpath runs round the building and also creates a link with the VZW Ubuntu site to the rear.

Cars are not allowed on the site and are confined to the kiss & ride on the street or underground.

There are three communal living areas with fully fitted kitchens in the building, although provision has also been made for putting a kitchenette in the studios, given the vital contribution of personal adaptability to the sense of homeliness.

A carer’s room with its own bedroom and bathroom provides decent overnight accommodation, ensuring that efficient assistance and personal care can be provided where necessary.
