The AZ Monica campus has a limited surface area and is situated along the junction of two busy roads. That is why we chose to develop closed volumes on the street side and oriented the patient rooms towards the courtyard garden and the green areas. The brick façade becomes a surprising sculpture which transcends the banality of the streetscape. The elegant closedness of this façade contrasts with the surprisingly light patio in the hospital’s epicentre. This is where the elevators, the information desk, the restaurant and the junction of all ambulant circulation are located. From here the hospital is legible and has a clear structure.
The hospital’s dynamic management team wishes to further position the hospital in terms of acute and ambulatory care, choosing to roll out an ambitious programme in spite of the limited surface area. The master plan therefore provides for a structured framework with logical circulation patterns for the entire hospital as well as the required flexibility for changes and extensions.
